Chapter 23

Courtney

The small get-together the next night was for Travis and Rebeca’s co-ed bachelorette and bachelor party. And it isn’t small at all. People are gathered around the pool, drinking beer and playing games. When you first walk into the house, there is a picture of the happy couple that you sign and leave well wishes on. Everywhere you look, they’ve got photos of them together.

Elijah holds my hand as we pass through the crowd to get to where Travis and Becca sit at the top of the table, like the king and queen of the court, to say hello to them. I hesitate a moment when I see Abigail next to the blonde with a veil and penis crown on her head. I knew I would see her here, being that this is her house. However, the nerves I was fighting at seeing her again since that morning when she found me in a T-shirt of Elijah’s brings all the nervousness back.

Elijah turns back, sensing my hesitation when I stop walking and faces me. Concerned eyes latch onto me as he asks, “You okay?”

Frowning, looking down at the floor beneath my feet, I take a deep breath to calm the nerves that are running through me.

“I don’t know if this was a good idea for me to be here, Elijah. I know things are good with you, Rhett and Abigail, but I still feel like the other woman.” He laughs and sees I’m not laughing with him, and his expression changes instantly, rubbing my bare arms soothingly with his hands.

“Babe, everything will be fine. We’re all right. Abigail and I are friends. There are no hard feelings between us.” He swiftly kisses my forehead, assuring me again, “If you feel uncomfortable after we say hello, we can leave, okay? But we are here.” He quickly looks over my shoulder and waves at someone behind me. “Besides, Rhett has seen us and is walking toward us.”

Rhett walks to us and hugs Elijah like he didn’t just see him the other day. I quietly stand there as they talk, and Elijah puts his arm over my shoulder.

“It’s good to see you again, Courtney.” Rhett barely brushes a kiss to my cheek. “So, I’m passing out game cards.” Rhett rolls his eyes and hands us the tiny square that has the heading Fifteen Things about Travis and Becca. You have to answer the questions by circling the mustache or the heart for each person. “Abigail has all these crazy games planned for today.”

Abigail walks up right as he says this and states, “It’s my girl’s party, and she wants games.” Smiling widely at us, she hugs both of us at the same time. “I am so glad you two could make it. Elijah was worried you wouldn’t come with him, but I knew you would.”

Uncomfortable is putting it lightly with how I’m feeling now. If I could hide somewhere under a rock, I would. Abigail takes my hand and pulls me toward the table with the king and queen, Elijah and Rhett following behind us.
